I can see the new wu's listed in the batch monitor, and the server status is all green, but nobody is downloading yet. Message log says project is down.

I'm guessing the wu generator is still running as the unsent value seems to be rising.

At startup of a new batch we are faster than the generator, which can cause depressions and frustration for that little demon process *g

This month we pre-gerenated lots of workunits in the BOINC database to avoid the "no work available" messages at startup. Now they are being distibuted.

best regards

Using Linux. Had SIMAP marked as "no work" while you were out of workunits. An hour ago I unmarked your project, but your server responded to my client's work request with "no work from project".

Might this be because the request (the way I have set up my system) being made for work is for the 'x86_64-anonymous' platform? As far as I can remember, I have not changed anything in my SIMAP setup since the last time your project had work for me.

There's currently lots of work being distributed - it seems not to be a general problem. The platforms did not change since last year - all of the former ones are still available. But a x86_64-anonymous platform never existed. Do you mean x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu or x86_64-pc-linux-gnu?

best regards

All I can tell you is that in February it worked with SIMAP.

What I am doing is "exercising" the 64-bit executables. (In this case, they are simap_5.10_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu and hmmer_5.09_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.) BUT what I am using is the latest 32-bit BOINC client. (And it *does* all work, with SIMAP 64-bit in February and with ABC 64-bit today.) In order to do this, I am making use of 'app_info.xml' to point to the 64-bit executables. And when 'app_info.xml' is being used), the BOINC client reports the platform as 'anonymous'.

Please disregard my previous posts to this topic.

I haven't changed anything - but all of a sudden there was a new request by my system for work from SIMAP, and this time new workunits *were* assigned.

Don't know what happened that earlier time. All's well that ends well.

Thanks for being willing to help.

I've noticed occasional times when work is available, but I get the "no work available" message. It goes for an hour or two then work arrives.

I suspect this has to do with the server deciding Windows vs Linux work. There's lots of work, but maybe the server ran out of the kind being requested?

Just a thought.

I wonder if it is the mega cache slurpers, that have drained the pile AGAIN and the humble, "turn it round in a couple of hours then get a new one type" is left in the cold again.

The scheduler reply (XML file) seems not to say "no work available", it just contains no WU. Maybe the scheduler sometimes does not recognize the <work_req_seconds> tag properly.

I see the "no work available" message on both my Windows machines (2 of them) and my Linux machines (4 of them) every so often. I can non-scientifically report (i.e. I was watching only part of the time) that when the Windows machines didn't have work the Linux machines did and vice versa. My sample size is small (like 1 or 2) because I really haven't been paying attention and I didn't take notes because it wasn't a big deal.

I doubt anyone is slurping them all because the project server status is showing an almost constant number just below 10,000. This number is updated every 5 minutes.

There is no conspiracy to grab work; just the strange (to users) ways of the BOINC server. Of course BOINC ALWAYS works in a logical way, but the users (like me) just don't know what logic it uses :-)

@adrianxw,

You are getting "no work available" sometimes but are you getting zero work?

I am getting "no work available" too but never for long. It seems like I can get another WU if I first upload a result. Is that just coincidence or are others seeing that too? It's allowing me to keep 1 or 2 in my work cache at all times but no more than that. I cannot say it is by design, maybe it is just an accident. A similar scheme was proposed over at LHC recently. Maybe SIMAP implemented that scheme but didn't tell us?

I think there are so many empty caches to fill, the server is giving each cache small sips rather than big gulps. Caches that have a WU already and are requesting another WU are temporarily denied in order to get WUs to other caches that just came back to SIMAP and have zero WUs at the moment. That would get the largest number of hosts crunching in the least amount of time. If there are enough WUs then eventually everybody's cache will be full and the "no work available" responses will taper off. That's just my theory, I can't prove it.
